Our Church Leadership
Under Christ, the Head of the Church, the New Testament recognizes one main leadership office in the local church. Several complementary titles identify this office: elder, overseer, and pastor (Acts 20:17, 28; Ephesians 4:11–16; 1 Timothy 3:1–7; Titus 1:5–9; 1 Peter 5:1–2). Green Mountain Baptist Church is led by a team of such men, who are assisted by deacons (Acts 6:1–6; 1 Timothy 3:8–13) and various other ministry leaders.
Elders
Stephen R. Burch - pastor
Stephen Burch has a Bachelor of Arts in Music Ministries from Pensacola Christian College in Pensacola, Florida, and a Master of Arts in Biblical Studies from Bob Jones University Seminary in Greenville, South Carolina. He and his wife, Erica, have five children; they have been married since 2006.
Pastor Steve grew up in Michigan and came to faith in Christ at a young age while attending a Christian school. In 2005, he received his bachelor’s degree and was ordained at the Rochester Hills Baptist Church in Rochester Hills, Michigan. Following his ordination, he began to serve as an assistant pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama.
In October 2010, he became the pastor of our church. He teaches high school Bible and social studies at Rutland Area Christian School; he also serves as a visiting faculty member at the Biblical Theological Seminary in Amman, Jordan. In 2023, Pastor Steve was appointed as a chaplain in the Civil Air Patrol (the United States Air Force Auxiliary). He strongly desires for Christ to be glorified in our community and for the gospel to change lives.
Jonathan Butterfield - elder
Jonathan and his wife, Sydney, both have strong desires to see authentic, Christ-centered change in the lives of God’s people, who will then naturally shed Light into our communities. Jonathan has a particular burden for encouraging Christians to grow in their faith, live victoriously through God’s strength, and develop a deep love for their local churches.
Jonathan grew up in Rutland County, Vermont, and honorably served in the United States Navy where he met his lovely wife, Sydney, in the state of Washington. They were married in 2009 and currently have two children. He now serves the church by teaching Sunday School to middle and high school students.
In 2016, Jonathan and Sydney attended Ellerslie Mission Society, where they completed a 20-week Basic and Practicum Discipleship course at the Windsor, Colorado, campus. Their time at Ellerslie deepened their commitment to supporting and strengthening the local church in Vermont.
